Jewel says her top songs were ‘medicine’ amid mental health issues. Now, she’s helping others

Long before she became a household name with hits like Who Will Save Your Soul, Jewel was using a pen and paper to survive. For the Grammy nominated singer, songwriting and journaling weren’t just creative outlets; they were essential medicine used to navigate a childhood marked by instability and trauma. Reflecting on her youth, Jewel recalls watching adults around her attempt to numb their pain through substances and dysfunctional relationships, leading her to a pivotal realization at age nine that you cannot outrun pain. Inspired by the way buffalo charge directly into storms rather than fleeing them, she decided that the quickest path to healing was moving toward her struggles instead of avoiding them.

This internal toolkit served as a lifeline during her teenage years, especially after she moved out at fifteen. Without access to formal therapy or traditional support systems, Jewel developed her own behavioral health strategies to ensure her past wouldn’t dictate her future. She describes her early songs as pieces of medicine she wrote specifically because she desperately needed to hear those words herself just to get through the night. It was only later that she discovered the vulnerability in those lyrics resonated globally, turning her private survival mechanisms into anthems for millions of other people struggling with their own emotional burdens.

Now 52, Jewel is pivoting from personal healing to public service by providing others with the practical tools she once had to invent for herself. Through the Inspiring Children Foundation and the upcoming Not Alone Summit in Las Vegas, she is bridging the gap between entertainment, science, and wellness to foster better mental health outcomes for young people. The summit aims to move beyond surface level conversations about well being and instead offer tangible resources that help individuals regulate their nervous systems and shift their psychological postures.

Despite her success, Jewel remains candid about the perils of external validation. Having witnessed the seductive nature of fame and the modern toxicity of social media, she warns against the belief that changing one’s outer world can fix inner turmoil. Comparing fame to a dangerous substance, she emphasizes that true stability comes from within rather than from likes or followers. As she continues to explore art and poetry, Jewel looks back at her relentless early work ethic with a mix of pride and caution, urging others to find balance while continuing her lifelong mission of proving that no one has to face their storms alone.
