Intermountain Health highlights APP Week, training next generation of providers

In celebration of National Advanced Practice Providers Week, Intermountain Health is turning the spotlight toward the critical role that nurse practitioners and physician assistants play in modern medicine. These clinicians, known collectively as APPs, serve as a vital bridge in the healthcare system by diagnosing illnesses, prescribing medications and managing comprehensive patient care. By expanding the number of qualified providers available to the public, these professionals help patients receive high quality treatment closer to home and significantly reduce wait times for essential medical services.

To ensure a steady pipeline of talent, Intermountain Health is emphasizing its Nevada based fellowship program which focuses on preparing recent graduates for demanding careers in primary care. Launched in 2017, this year long postgraduate initiative provides newly minted nurse practitioners and physician assistants with a structured environment where they can refine their clinical skills through hands on patient care and specialized rotations. This targeted approach aims to tackle the persistent shortage of primary care access across Nevada by giving new providers the tools they need to succeed from day one.

Under the guidance of leaders like fellowship director Ida Will and physician assistant Margaret Campbell, participants benefit from direct mentorship and professional development opportunities. By training alongside seasoned caregivers, fellows are able to build the necessary confidence and leadership abilities required to handle complex cases independently. Ultimately, the program serves as a strategic investment in the state’s healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that the next generation of providers is well equipped to meet the evolving needs of Nevadans.
