Survey of children, youth in New Brunswick highlights health and wellness disparities

A comprehensive new survey conducted by the New Brunswick Health Council has revealed a stark divide in the health and well-being of students based on their family’s financial situation. By surveying over 65,000 participants across public schools using a scale that measures household affluence through assets like vehicles and bedrooms, researchers found that children from disadvantaged backgrounds face significantly higher hurdles. These inequities manifest in everything from basic nutrition to emotional stability, creating a gap in quality of life between the wealthiest and poorest twenty percent of students.

One of the most concerning findings involves food security, specifically regarding breakfast which is widely seen as vital for classroom success. Only 28 percent of children from low-income households reported eating breakfast every day, while nearly half of those from wealthy homes did the same. While Premier Susan Holt’s government has moved toward addressing these gaps with a universal breakfast program and a pay-what-you-can lunch initiative, some implementation delays remain. Stéphane Robichaud, head of the NB Health Council, remains hopeful that these initiatives will eventually drive up those numbers as the council continues its monitoring.

The disparity extends far beyond diet into the realm of mental and physical health. Students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are much less likely to describe their overall health as very good or excellent compared to their wealthier peers. Mental health scores followed a similar downward trend, with only 31 percent of youth from low-status households reporting high levels of mental wellness against 54 percent from high-status backgrounds. Physical activity also suffers among this group, often due to practical barriers such as a lack of reliable transportation to get to sports or community events.

This isolation appears to leave vulnerable students more exposed to social struggles. According to the data, youth from poorer families are more likely to experience chronic loneliness and are more frequently targets of bullying at school. Robichaud suggests that this could be tied to visible markers of poverty, such as clothing, but notes that a lack of supporting networks makes it harder for these children to build resilience against peer harassment. Because they often feel more alone than their affluent counterparts, the psychological impact of bullying becomes even more profound for those already struggling at home.
